ABOUT JULIE

Julie Butler and her husband, Rod, have lived in Carson City since 1995. Married for 34 years, the couple raised two sons who have stayed in the Carson City area and are an integral part of the couple's lives. The couple welcomed a daughter-in-law to the family in 2024. Their youngest son recently got engaged, and the couple is thrilled to soon have another daughter-in-law in the family.

Throughout their childhoods, Julie volunteered as a parent helper for her sons’ various sports activities, including Little League, BMX, Pop Warner, and being a founding member of the Carson High School Wrestling Team’s Booster Club. When her youngest son joined the U.S. Marine Corps after high school, Julie volunteered with MarineParents.com to help other parents of Marines adjust to having a child in the Corps. Having a son in the Marines opened Julie’s eyes to the unique stresses that military families go through when a loved one answers the call to service.

Julie’s career includes 30 years of service to her fellow Nevadans and began in 1994, working for the State of Nevada in the Budget Division, where she assisted with forecasting state General Fund and gaming revenues.

Since then, she held various positions working her way to a division administrator within the Department of Public Safety. Butler managed the Nevada State Patrol’s dispatch centers, the state’s criminal history records (RAP sheets), state sex offender registry, firearms point of sale background check program (a.k.a., the “Brady check”), and the fingerprint-based background check program for positions of trust, such as teachers, therapists, school volunteers, etc.
She also served as a member of various committees on the state and national level, including the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Crime Prevention and Privacy Compact Council.
Julie was eventually appointed as the Director of the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles where she oversaw 18 field offices and 1,200+ employees statewide. She worked to set the Department on a course of IT system modernization, slowly and systematically moving services online and encouraging people to skip the trip to the DMV. The modernization effort continues today, after setting a good foundation and path for success.

Retiring in 2024, Julie’s service to the State of Nevada has given her an excellent view into the operations of state government and the legislative process. She knows what works and what doesn’t. As your Republican voice for Assembly District 40, Julie will bring her passion for service and government efficiency to work for you, serving with honesty, integrity, and a focus on the kitchen table issues important to all of us.

Julie’s personal interests include a love of mountain biking, camping, and hiking. She is also working on her golf game. Weather permitting, she is usually outside doing one of these activities. In 2024, she completed the Rock Tahoe Half Marathon, a first for her.
